With all of the news about the new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), where do trademark owners even start? The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is currently reviewing over 1,000 applications for new generic top level domains, such as ".food," ".bank," ".app," ".movie," ".wine," etc. The first new gTLDs are expected to go live as early as June 2013.

The Relevance of Being Relevant
I am writing this while attending an investment banking conference. At a bank M&A panel, one of the speakers, in response to a question about appropriate critical mass stated, "You must be relevant in your marketplace." What a simple, but powerful statement. In today's banking environment, challenged by narrow margins and nominal loan growth, the concept of relevance is critical. You need to be relevant in terms of some critical mass, footprint, reputation, people, and the ability to competitively deliver quality products and services.

President Obama has released a budget plan for the 2014 fiscal year that increases funding for the development of clean energy. Before you break out the champagne, however, keep in mind that this is just a proposal by the President and must still be approved by Congress.
